AXA Launches Market’s First “SurgiCare Surgical Insurance Plan” to Provide Lump-Sum Payment for VHIS-Defined Surgeries

HONG KONG, August 5, 2021 / PRNewswire / – AXA Hong Kong (AXA) launches the “SurgiCare Surgical Insurance Plan” (“SurgiCare”). “SurgiCare” is the leading surgical insurance plan on the market based on the four levels of the Voluntary Health Insurance Scheme (VHIS) surgical intervention program – minor, intermediate, major and complex, to provide comprehensive coverage for more than 450 kinds of operation. “SurgiCare” offers lump-sum benefits of up to 100% of the sum insured for complex surgeries and 30% for heavy surgeries. It also offers unlimited[1] number of claims with a lump sum payment of 2,500 HKD and 6,000 HKD for each of the minor and intermediate surgeries covered respectively.

Kevin Chor, Chief Life and Health Insurance Officer of AXA Hong Kong and Macao, shared his perspective on the results of a recent survey on the experience of Hong Kong people with surgery and presented the main benefits of the new “ SurgiCare Surgical Insurance Plan ”.

It doesn’t matter what disease it is or where the surgery takes place, “SurgiCare” offers clients a lump sum payment whenever surgery is medically necessary and covered by VHIS. “SurgiCare” provides coverage for daily and additional non-medical expenses incurred during the recovery trip, which is an excellent addition to customers’ existing medical insurance plans which can only cover medical bills. With “SurgiCare”, customers can enjoy truly comprehensive health protection.

With a premium as low as HKD10 per day[2], customers can be well protected by “SurgiCare”. The premium for “SurgiCare” will not be affected by medical inflation. Regardless of any change in health status and the history of claims after joining the plan, renewal of “SurgiCare” is guaranteed up to the age of 100. September 30, 2021, a customer who takes out two or more policies with different insureds, each policy can benefit from a premium discount of up to 12 months.

Major or complex surgeries are common and require financial support and time to recover

In Hong Kong, more than a third (36%) of people have had at least one surgery in their lifetime, according to a joint survey[3] led by AXA and YouGov, an international research and data analysis group. Of those who had major or complex surgeries, nearly 20% spent more than 250,000 HKD during their convalescence which can last more than two weeks (66%) or even more than 3 months (14%). It can also lead to loss of income – 62% experienced loss of income from surgery, of which almost 10% had no income for more than a year. In addition, data from the hospital authority[4] shows that major and complex surgeries are very common. In 2019-2020, more than 100,000 operations performed inside operating theaters were major or complex surgeries, which represented 57% of the total number of operations.

Additional support allowance for parents to take care of their loved ones

AXA also fully recognizes that many parents would be very worried if their children were hospitalized, so “SurgiCare” offers an additional one-time payment of 5% of the sum insured as an additional benefit if the insured is 12 years old. or less undergoes major surgery or complex surgery coverage.
