Rebranding Education Abroad Program after Ambedkar: TDP
Hundreds of Telugu Desam party activists staged a march down the main thoroughfare here on Monday to protest the removal of Dr BR Ambedkar’s name from the ‘overseas education funding’ scheme, saying it’ is an insult to the oppressed sections of people who hold the leader in high esteem.
The activists, led by Ongole Lok Sabha Unit SC Wing Chairman Ch. Shyam, gathered in front of the Dalit icon statue near Ambedkar Bhavan and shouted slogans demanding immediate restoration of his name in the title of the project.
The scheme, launched under the TDP regime to provide financial aid of ₹15 lakh each to Dalit students to pursue higher education in overseas universities, was initially called ‘Ambedkar Overseas Education Funding’ but was renamed ‘ Jagananna Overseas Education Funding”.
People would teach a lesson to Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy who showed arrogance in putting his name to the scheme, said party leader G. Raj Vimal.
The current government had starved funds for the program for the past three years, jeopardizing the future of Scheduled Caste students, TDP leaders alleged, adding that Chandrababu Naidu’s government earmarked ₹377 crore and allowed more than 4,500 Dalit students to pursue their studies abroad. .
