Roanoke County purchases land for new CTE Center
Roanoke County – Public schools in Roanoke County are expanding significantly.
The school system announced during Tuesday’s board of supervisors business meeting that the school board has officially purchased a site for the new Roanoke County Public Schools Career and Technical Center.
The land is adjacent to Peters Creek Road between Airport Road and Burlington Elementary School.
The plan is for this new center to replace the existing CTE facility that houses the Burton Center for Arts and Technology.
Tonight the School Board and Board of Supervisors heard the proposal for a Citizens Advisory Committee for the new center and discussed plans for the future
The site was chosen based on the recommendations of the advisory committee, which was appointed by both the supervisory board and the school board.
The committee worked for over a year to find a site, as well as to identify the needs for the new centre, and they presented their findings at tonight’s meeting, which included information they had gathered during visiting other CTE centers in Virginia.
They hope the new center will benefit not only the students it will serve, but also the economy.
“To celebrate the economic development of this property, to take it from Salem, to bring it to Roanoke County, what it’s going to do for this area, in my opinion, is phenomenal,” said Tim Greenway, member of the school board. . “What this will do for students is almost secondary to the economic development that will come from it.”
Several advisory board members have expressed centre-wide opposition due to the potential cost and there has yet to be consensus on an exact budget or plan for this project at this time.
