Washington State Community College (WSCC), as part of the Building Rural Innovation, Designing Educational Strategies (BRIDGES) cohort, recently presented its plan to strengthen student support and improve its curriculum. The presentation was made at the Rural Community College Alliance conference held in Hickory, North Carolina.
The WSCC, along with four other rural community colleges from across the country, was selected in late 2020 to form the inaugural cohort of the BRIDGES initiative. Colleges were asked to design, test and scale post-secondary approaches that support the economic agility of rural learners and strengthen the capacity of rural community colleges to be engines of economic growth in their communities.
Vice President of Academic Affairs Sarah Parker presented the WSCC plan at the conference. She explained that the five colleges discussed the prototypes they plan to launch in January 2022. The WSCC pilot project will focus on redesigning the facility’s robotics and automation program, which includes information from the facility. integrated identification.
“Our plan is specially designed to support our adult learners”, Parker said. “Not only will students be able to earn diplomas at the end of each semester which will be valuable in the job market, but they will also have free access to student aids such as gas cards, evening babysitting services and manuals. “
She went on to explain that through the design process, the college was able to identify the delivery needs and educational goals of mature students in the Southeast Ohio area.
“Our hope is to launch a model that can be replicated at the WSCC and shared with other rural community colleges across the country. “ Parker said.
The BRIDGES cohort also includes the College of Eastern Idaho, Eastern Maine Community College, Finger Lakes Community College in New York, and Zane State College in Ohio. It is funded through a $ 1.9 million grant from Ascendium Education Group, and the colleges will work with Education Design Lab, a national nonprofit and leader in the design, implementation and implementation. the scale of new learning models for higher education and the future of work. Upon completion of the three-year initiative, Education Design Lab will draw on the collective experiences of rural community college partners to publish a dissertation that articulates the changing needs of the rural learner population and presents exemplary models that offer economic opportunities to rural communities.
